Sanrio Characters 101

Sixty-plus years of characters, one shared universe of soft pastel chaos. Meet the cast — and find your character.

Sanrio has been manufacturing joy since 1960, and its genius is personality design: every character is a mood you can own. Choosing your Sanrio character is a personality test the internet takes very seriously. Here's the who's-who.

The icons

Hello Kitty — the empire. A bow, no visible mouth, infinite range from kindergarten to Balenciaga collabs. My Melody — the sweet one in the bunny hood; picture pink gingham and baking. Kuromi — My Melody's chaotic rival in a jester hood and skull: the it-girl for anyone whose softness has an edge. Cinnamoroll — a flying puppy with cinnamon-roll tail, currently Japan's most-voted-for character; his fans are legion and gentle. Pompompurin — a golden retriever in a beret whose entire personality is naps and pudding.

The deep cuts

Badtz-Maru — sardonic penguin, the 90s mall-goth pick. Pochacco — sporty dog, beloved by people who actually go outside. Little Twin Stars — Kiki and Lala, pastel celestial dream fuel. Gudetama — an egg devoid of will to live, weirdly life-affirming. Loving a deep cut is its own flex: the merch is rarer and the recognition nods hit harder.

Collecting notes

Sanrio operates on seasonal series — café-themed, zodiac, anniversary — that retire rather than restock, which is why last autumn's set trades above retail every spring. Anniversary items (Hello Kitty's 50th, Cinnamoroll's 20th) are the reliable appreciators. If a series speaks to you, buy it in-season; "I'll get it later" is the collector's most expensive sentence.
